Winter brings shorter days, chilly weather and plenty of snowy mornings.  All of which, for parents, can make outings with a little one feel like a big adventure. Whether you're bundling up for quick walks, appointments or, family visits, the season can feel long when you're trying to keep baby or toddler warm, entertained, and well fed.  In this post, we'll share easy winter activities for babies and toddlers including outdoor winter fun activity, and simple indoor fun to help make the most of the season.

Outdoor Adventures with Purpose

Bundle up your little ones and head outdoors for a winter walk with intention.  Before stepping out, create a simple checklist of things to look for while on the walk.  For example, snow, animal tracks, bird sounds, leaves, pinecones, or anything unique to your area.  Frame it as a chance to appreciate Allah's beautiful creation, helping even the youngest children to notice the wonders around them.

A walk to the library or bookstore

If you live near a library or bookstore, make it your destination.  As you walk, let your toddler tick off each discovery on the list, turning the journey into an exciting scavenger hunt.  Once indoors, you can explore Muslim children's books to borrow or buy to enjoy reading at home. On the walk back, encourage your toddler to point out anything new they notice, even if it wasn't on the list.  This builds curiosity and mindfulness.

If a library or bookstore isn't nearby, the checklist alone becomes a fun, standalone nature walk.  Collect small items along the way. Leaves, pinecones, twigs that can be used later for crafts.

Walk to the Masjid

If your masjid is within walking distance, turn the journey into a peaceful family outing. Point out familiar landmarks, let your toddler enjoy the excitement of "going to the masjid". Also, checkout your local masjid for activities.

There are plenty of other winter walking ideas to keep babies and toddlers engaged. Let's explore:

Colour hunt walk - Choose a colour of the day- help your toddler find things in nature that match. For example, Ask, "Do you see anything white?"  and let them point to the snow.

Stop and listen - Listen to the crunch of snow, a birdcall or the wind rustling branches. They can focus on sensory awareness and the quiet beauty Allah placed in winter.

Safari Hunt - Look for animal prints, rabbits, squirrels, birds in the snow and guess together what passed by.  This activity sparks imagination and early science skills.

After some fresh air, it's always nice to warm up indoors.  For an extra cozy touch, end your outing with a warm drink at home. Hot cocoa for toddler and warm milk for baby to transition for indoor activities later on.

Indoor Activities

Back at home, extend the outdoor experience with cozy indoor learning. Explore Muslim themed children's board books or picture books you borrowed from the library, or picked up at a local bookstore. You can also read our October's post spotlighting
3 Children's Books for Islamic History Month. After returning home from prayers at the masjid, toddlers can enjoy easy creative play like drawing a masjid, colouring a printable, or building a masjid using soft blocks or toddler safe toys. Babies may need a nap.

You can also introduce a few simple Arabic words related to winter such as snow, cold or animals and which animals hibernate during the colder months. Talk about how Allah helps them stay warm. Encourage creativity by creating artwork inspired from your walk. Draw snowflakes or cut out paper snowflakes to decorate a window, or create a winter scene using safe items collected from outdoor treasures. These activities help toddlers link the outdoor experiences to creative hands-on Islamic learning at home.

Conclusion

Winter offers simple opportunities to connect our little ones with nature, creativity, and Islamic learning.  From using a walking checklist to visiting the library, bookstore or masjid, collecting treasures in the snow, or making cozy crafts at home, each moment helps babies and toddlers to enjoy the season and create lasting memories.

I hope these winter activity ideas inspire your next outing and spark meaningful indoor play. Rooted in curiosity, connection and faith. Feel free to share your experiences or your own ideas with me.  I'd love to hear how you make winter magical for your little ones.
