Simple Eid Activities for Kids to Enjoy at Home

Eid is such a joyful occasion for families.  The day often begins with morning prayers at the local masjid, children dressed in their new outfits and they are full of excitement.  Once everyone returns home, the rest of the day can unfold in simple, meaningful ways.  There are so many easy activities you can do with children. From making Eid cards or decorating small treat bags, to reading favourite Eid stories together.  Baking cookies together to share with neighbours, friends or family is a thoughtful way to share joy. Of course, Eid is the perfect time to encourage acts of kindness and gratitude, such as preparing donations or contributing to local food bins. Not all of these activities need to happen on Eid day itself.  Many can be done in the days leading up to Eid, helping children build anticipation and to understand the spirit of giving.

Kids of all ages enjoy arts and crafts and Eid is a special time to bring out their creativity.  They can make Eid cards for family and friends using colourful construction paper, crayons, pencil crayons, paints and beaded stickers. Plus the essentials like scissors and glue.  Tailoring the crafts to reflect Eid celebrations can include lanterns, mosques, food, lettering and more.  Children can also decorate small treat bags to fill with candy to share during family visits.  Simple arts and crafts activities give kids a sense of accomplishment.

Note:  If you're looking for a simple activity to print at home, "The 5 Pillars of Islam Colouring and Activity Book" is available as a printable on my website and in my Etsy shop.  See it in my shop

Reading Eid-themed books is a fun and meaningful activity to enjoy with kids especially on a quieter Eid day without visitors or outings. There are many books to choose from at the local library or you can simply bring out your favourite Eid collection at home.  Reading is for all ages. For example, "Excited for Eid" is a lovely board book for younger children and it's part of the neighborhood series. ("Friday Fun", another neighborhood series book was also included in my earlier blog post as part of a book review.) Reading together also creates a quiet moment of connection and helps children learn about Eid in a gentle, age-appropriate way.

Since Eid is a celebration of sharing, baking together is a lovely way to involve kids in the joy of giving. Baking cookies or cupcakes is a great opportunity to involve kids in the festivities. Their role will vary according to their age.  They can help add ingredients, stir the batter, cut out star-shaped cookie dough or decorate the finished treats.  The baked goods can be shared as gifts during family visits or used to decorate the table and enjoy later.  It's yet another fun, hands-on activity that brings joy to the day.

Last but not least, Eid is also a beautiful opportunity to encourage simple acts of kindness.  Children can help prepare small treat bags for neighbours, call grandparents or relatives to wish them Eid Mubarak, or help tidy up after the celebrations.  Even the smallest gestures such as sharing toys with siblings, or help set the table allow kids to understand that Eid is not only about receiving but also about giving.  These little moments of kindness add warmth to the day and helps kids feel connected to the true spirit of Eid.

In addition to small acts of kindness at home, Eid is also a wonderful time to involve children in giving back to the community.  During Ramadan, you can collect non-perishable food items in a box and take the kids along when dropping the food items off at the masjid's donation bins.  This helps them see firsthand how food can be shared with others in need.  Families can also gather gently used toys to be distributed within the community, and children may choose to donate some of their own toys that they no longer use.  These simple acts help kids understand the importance of gratitude, generosity, and caring for others. Values that lie at the heart of Islam.

If you're looking for something simple to share with family and friends, I've just added two new Eid digital cards to my shop.  They're easy to download and print at home and they would make a thoughtful addition to your Eid gifts or treat bags.

To conclude, simple Eid‑themed activities like crafts, reading together, baking, and small acts of kindness can make the day feel meaningful and special. These activities help children create, connect with family, and appreciate the values of gratitude and generosity. Whether your Eid is quiet or filled with visits, I hope these ideas bring warmth and ease to your celebration. Wishing you, Eid Mubarak!
