Self-Care is a Form of Shukr: 6 Tips for Muslim Moms
"Paradise lies under the feet of Mothers" - Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
Mother's Day has just passed, and with Eid Al-Adha approaching at the end of the month, this season invites us to pause, reflect, and honour the daily efforts of mothers. Eid al-Adha reminds us of Hajar (AS) a mother rewarded for her patience and faith and she continues to inspire us today. Every day should be a moment to pause and reflect on the blessings of motherhood. Whether you are caring for a newborn, chasing a toddler guiding older children, or like me, watching your own daughter become a new mom, it's easy to forget that you can't pour from an empty cup.
Taking care of yourself isn't a selfish act; it is an act of Shukr (gratitude). Below are 6 tips to embrace self-care throughout the year.
Reclaim a little Morning ("Me Time")
Even 10 mins of quiet before the household wakes up can help you transition peacefully from sleep to the day ahead. Enjoy a little silence and sit with a warm drink before the activities begin.
Prayers, reading a few ayats of the Quran, and reciting duas all help to keep you centered and grounded. Take some timeout throughout your busy day to connect with Allah (SWT). In the last 10 days of Dhul Hijjah, small acts of dhikir brings blessing to your home. Simplify your physical to-do list so you have some energy for your spiritual one.
Eat Sensibly and Stay Active
Take care of your body by eating nutritional meals fruits and vegetables. "The foods of Sunnah" such as: honey and dates, and adding gentle movements such as a short walk, or stretching help regulate your energy, mood and mental clarity.
Reconnect with Yourself
Revisit a hobby, read book, crafts, journal writing remind you that you are a person with interests, creativity and goals.
Connect with Others
Motherhood can feel as though you're isolated from other people. Reach out to family members, call a friend, visit a neighbour. Consider joining a library or a recreation program for moms or a local masjid's mothers' program. You're not alone.
Sleep When you Can
This can be challenging but sleep is very important to help you get through the day. Sleep when baby naps during the day, or take short breaks throughout the day to restore your energy.
May Allah bless your journey, and reward your patience. Eid Mubarak!
