Diaper Bag and Essential Checklist
A diaper bag is one of the most important pieces of baby gear. It comes in many sizes and styles but no matter the bag, what truly matters is how it's packed. When organized well, a diaper bag can make outings such as: appointments, short trips, or visits with family and friends much easier and less stressful.
A well packed diaper bag helps you stay organized and reduces the chance of forgetting essential items. As a mother of two and now a grandmother of three, I've learned that having a reliable bag is important. This checklist is not exhaustive as every family's needs are different and those needs change as your baby grows. Here's the list.
- Diapers
The obvious essential. Pack enough for your outing plus one or two extras.
- Diaper Wipes
Perfect for diaper changes, sticky hands, and quick clean ups. Travel packs are great for saving space. (unscented wipes are good) I made this crocheted baby wipes case for my second granddaughter. The case was used for the travel pack sized wipes and it was easy to find in a diaper bag.
- Bottles ( with milk or formula)
If you bottle feed, having pre-measured bottles ready makes feeding on the go easier.
- Baby Bottle Covers
Not only do bottle covers help with insulation and grip, they add a personal cozy touch to your diaper bag while protecting bottles from minor bumps crocheted and handmade. These crocheted "little hearts" baby bottle covers are also available in my shop
- Bibs
Lightweight bibs are handy during feedings. Especially when you don't want outfit changes after a meal.

- Burp Cloths
Compact and versatile, burp cloths help with spit-ups, and spills.
- Disposable Bags- for soiled diapers
A must have for containing messes.
- Change of Clothes
Accidents happen. A clean outfit can turn a stressful moment into a manageable one.
- Changing Pad
A portable changing pad provides a clean, comfortable surface wherever you are to change baby.
- Diaper Cream (travel size)
Helps prevent and soothe diaper rash.
- Blanket
Receiving and seasonal blankets light or warm blanket depending on the weather. Receiving blankets like the ones I made my granddaughters are especially versatile and very useful.
- Baby Washcloths
Great for gentle cleanups, wiping hands and face after feedings.
- Soft Toys
A small toy can help sooth your baby, keep them entertained, and it provides familiarity in new environments.
In conclusion, use this list as a starting point and adjust items depending on the season. Adding things like seasonal hats, mitts in colder months or sunscreen in warmer weather helps to ensure you're prepared while keeping your diaper bag practical and manageable.
So what's in your diaper bag?
