Simple Spring Activities to Connect Little Ones to Nature
Simple activities like nature walks, planting seeds, reading seasonal books and creating crafts can help little ones connect with their surroundings and nurture gratitude in young hearts.
"And if you tried to count Allah's blessings, you would never be able to number them." Surah An-Nahl (16:18)
One fun activity is taking local walks in the neighbourhood. Even a simple stroll towards a nearby park gives children a perfect way to take in their surroundings and observe nature around them. They can notice the early signs of spring such as the tiny buds on the trees, early flowers emerging from the ground, green grass, the sound of birds, and so much more. These moments offer a chance to admire Allah's creation up close. Counting while walking such as "how many birds do you see?" or "how many yellow flowers can we spot" is another engaging activity it allows little ones to practise their counting skills.
I've included a free printable nature scavenger hunt that you can bring along so little ones can check off what they discover along the walk.

After returning home from your neighbourhood walk, you can sit together and chat about what your little one saw and heard. This simple reflection often turns into a fun craft activity. Children can draw, paint or colour the signs of spring. It's a way to express gratitude for Allah's many gifts. If they collected smooth stones along the way, you can wash and let them dry, and then paint them with washable paint. Once finished, these little treasures can be displayed outside in the garden or on a bookshelf as a reminder of their discovery.
Just like the rock collection, your child could collect leaves and twigs and glue them on to paper or cardboard to create a collage. It's a great way for them to explore textures, shapes and colours.
Planting seeds is another nature-focused activity to enjoy in early spring. If you haven't tried growing herbs before, this is a lovely time to start. Your child can scoop soil into a small pot, plant seeds such as basil or mint, and water them gently. Over the next few weeks, they can watch the herbs sprout and grow. It's a simple, hands-on way to learn patience and responsibility. When the herbs are ready, they can be used in your cooking. It becomes a lesson in how Allah blesses us through the earth, providing food for us.
Introducing children to draw the day's weather. Rain, sunshine, clouds or a windy day encourages them to pay attention to the sky and notice how weather changes. You can talk about the weather and how rain for example, helps plants grow, which ties into the watering of the herbs they planted. It becomes a simple moment reminding us again of Allah's blessings.
To wrap up our spring activities, here are my picks for books and videos that pair well with nature walks, planting and noticing blessings all around us. You can purchase a copy of the book or you may already have them at home.
Asiya Discovers Spring: A Gentle Islamic Story About Spring, Nature, and Gratitude, Sara Omarzai-Brown
A story that helps children notice the signs of spring. Blossoms, colours, weather changes and the joy of exploring. This is a good book to read after the nature walks. The book also includes colouring pages.
Allah Made Everything, Zain Bhikha
This book reminds us that everything children see on their walk is part of Allah's creation. The Youtube video pairs well with the book and reinforces the message through song.
Omar and Hana- Let's Get Gardening
An exciting video that encourages planting seeds and care for plants and trees. This video goes well if you decide to plant seeds as a spring activity.
In conclusion, spring is a good time for simple meaningful activities. Whether you're walking, planting or reading together, these moments help little ones to stay engaged and grow with gratitude. Which activities will you do this season? comment below
