Summer has arrived, and the kids are home. Summer breaks offer plenty of opportunities for children to learn, grow and continue to stay connected to their faith while having fun. If you're looking for meaningful ideas to keep your kids engaged, I have 6 Muslim-themed activities you can enjoy together during the summer months.

1. Library Trips & Reading Muslim Books -Plus a Mini Book Report

Weekly library visits give kids a steady routine to keep their minds active and build a love of reading. Encourage them to choose a mix of Islamic stories and fun summer reads.  To help them process what they read, introduce a simple mini book report. The mini book report can include:

  •  Title and author
  • Main Characters
  • Where did the story take place? (setting)
  • A brief summary of the plot
  • Personal opinion or their favourite part of the book.

This activity reinforces reading comprehension, critical thinking, writing skills and speaking skills when they share their thoughts aloud.  You may find an earlier blog post helpful for reading recommendations: A Spotlight on 3 Children's Books for Islamic History Month

2. Nature Walks: Discovering Allah's (swt) Creation

Good weather is the perfect time for nature walks with the kids to notice the beauty of Allah's (swt) creation. A walk can be turned into a moment of reflection and wonder for little ones. It's an opportunity to observe, collect and appreciate their surroundings.  While walking, encourage your little one to take note of what they see and hear. They may hear birds chirping or see insects. They can also collect some items such as leaves, petals, and stones for activities at home.

They can make:

  • A collage
  • Leaf rubbings
  • Sorting items
  • Journal page findings

A scavenger hunt checklist is available in a previous blog post that can be downloaded and printed. Simple Spring Activities to Connect Little Ones to Nature While enjoying the fresh air, walks can build mindfulness and appreciation, and gratitude for Allah's (swt) creation.

3. Summer Camps

Summer camps provide structure for kids through fun recreation and skill-building activities. Many masjids offer summer programs that may offer a mix of Quran, story circles, crafts, and family events. Check your local masjid's July schedule. Even a short weekly program can help kids stay connected to their faith, build friendships and learn valuable new skills.
