Summer Makes & Self-Care

It's August, and summer is slowly winding down, making room for the next season. Before we settle into that new rhythm, I'd like to share some of my summer makes and projects that added joy and calmness to my days. From a handmade appreciation gift and cozy touches around the home, to participating in an Arabic calligraphy workshop hosted by my local masjid. Each moment reminded me how creativity can lift the spirits in simple ways.

"The Happy Pill"

This crocheted "happy pill" was made as a gift for a very thoughtful and helpful pharmacist. I felt good making it, knowing that she would most likely appreciate it. I added a keyring and a small note that read: " The Happy Pill  "-A little Dose of Joy". Side Effects: Unexpected smiles, warm fuzzies, improved mood.   It was my way to express my gratitude.

Crocheted Hanger Cover

During my visit to my local library, I found a crochet book filled with various projects. I was inspired to make a hanger cover to brighten up my closet and I finished it with a playful donut-themed ribbon. It was such a fun project to make and it turned out so "sweet" that I made four more in my granddaughters' favourite colours as birthday presents next year. Now, when I open my closet, I see something handmade which adds a nice moment of warmth and it gives me a sense of accomplishment.

Strawberry Tea Towel Edging

This was another fun project from the same library craft book. Earlier on, I bought a strawberry-themed tablecloth. So when I found a matching tea towel, I knew I needed it. Adding a green crocheted trim gave it a cottage-core feel that brightened up my kitchen area.

These little unplanned projects end up being the most meaningful. They brighten spaces, add warmth to our homes and they serve a practical purpose while offering just the kind of creativity needed to boost our spirits during busy days. While these crochet projects were fun to make and enjoy, I also wanted to step outside my comfort zone this summer. I participated in an Arabic calligraphy workshop hosted by my local masjid.  Since I didn't learn formal Arabic writing before, it was quite a challenge but the instructor was very helpful. What began as trying a new art form, turned into a fun evening meeting other learners, chatting and snacking. It was a lovely social event It's good to learn a new skill as it is a self-confidence boost. I'm no longer in the busy mom stage, but it's important for caregivers and busy parents to take some time out for themselves even for a few hours. Crafting isn't for everyone, but there are so many other ways to show appreciation, brighten spaces or enjoy a moment of creativity.
